In 2012 you can expect to see this color in the spring and fall fashion lines. But you can’t think literally – this is a color to inspire us. What shades of this color can you use? What colors will compliment this color well? Every store front will not be plastered with this bright orange, but you will see shades of it. Orange and Navy nautical combos. Orange tights or a large chunky orange necklace with a different color dress. Possibly lighter oranges in the spring and darker, deeper orange in the fall. Push yourself to not see the color for what it is, but how it can effect your wardrobe. You can click here for the Pantone Fashion Report to see what top fashion designers are saying about this color trend.
You can carry this color over into your home as well. It is a trend and while you may not want to paint every wall in your house a shade of orange, add in pops of color – a pillow, some curtains, a piece or two of furniture. Again, you will start to see it around – so be on the lookout! I found a few pictures on Pinterest. You will be sure to find all kinds of orange on there already! – You can read here about why Pinterest is one of my obsessions.
So how does this effect you as a graphic designer? Take the color trends of the year and incorporate them into your design – maybe in a brochure or an ad. But remember it is a trend and do not use it in your logo – not something you or your client will look at 5 years from now and wonder why in the world you chose that color or that design!
Often times clients will lean towards what they have seen around and will ask you what is fresh? what is popular? – but push them to think outside of that box – think of colors that speak to them or their company personally rather than what they are seeing in the stores or media. One of my favorite tricks is using a picture or item that they love (I have seen scarfs, pillows, family photos, etc.). Just make sure you use your color choices wisely!
It is important to follow fashion and home trends to incorporate into your design, but remember that these are trends…. and as they say on Project Runway – One day you’re in, and the next you’re out. Fashion is constantly changing and while it always gives you great ideas, it will not be around for long.
Here is a look at the past few years color choices – have you seen these around?
Happy color picking!
